A ranula is a cystic bluish translucent lesion that occurs under the tongue on the floor of the mouth. The cyst usually goes unnoticed until it enlarges and when it does, it causes difficulty in speaking and swallowing. It develops from the sublingual salivary gland due to blockage of its ducts for example after trauma to the floor of the mouth during an oral surgery. Sometimes a "plunging" ranula develops when a simple ranula extends into the neck and these often cause more problems. Since a ranula can increase in size and interfere with swallowing or speaking, it must be removed either through simple excision or by marsupialization.
