Meningitis

Meningitis is an infection of the meninges (layers that cover your brain) that may cause serious complications if not treated promptly. People of all age groups might get this infection. There are different types of meningitis - Bacterial (caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, Listeria monocytogenes) - Viral meningitis (more common, less serious) - Fungal meningitis - Parasitic meningitis Symptoms include: - Confusion - Fever - Headache - Photophobia - Stiff neck - Skin rashes Diagnosis: It starts with a detailed history and examination checking for any signs of stiffness and rashes. That is followed by some blood work up including CBC, CT/MRI, Spinal Tap. Treatment: Bacterial meningitis are usually treated with broad spectrum antibiotic followed by specific ones once the culture is obtained. Treament may also include cortecoateroids Viral meningitis usually goes away on its own without treatment. If a virus like herpes or influenza caused your illness, you might take antiviral medication. Fungal infections are treated with antifungals. Source : webmd
