Hernia mesh is the most common method of hernia repair. It is used in 9 out of 10 hernia repair procedures in the US. It is associated with prevention of recurrence of hernia. Hernia mesh is a device that is inserted around hernia through staple, glue, or stitches. The porous nature of mesh allow the new tissue to grow on it thereby facilitating healing of the hernia. There are two types of mesh available: 1. Absorbable mesh Absorbable mesh is a temporary mesh. It degrades over time. The tissue grows over mesh. The new tissue provides reinforcement to the repaired hernia. 2. Non-absorbable mesh Non-absorbable mesh is a permanent mesh. It provides the reinforcement to the repaired hernia for indefinite period of times.
