What is the difference between osteoporosis and osteopetrosis?

Osteoporosis is POROUS bone, that is it is less mineralized. Osteopetrosis is STONE bone and is excessively mineralized. In either case, loss of the normal architecture leads to an increased tendency of fractures. Osteoporosis is caused by conditions that lead to increased bone resorption such as old age, postmenopause, endocrine abnormalities and nutritional deficiencies. Osteopetrosis is a genetic condition in which osteoclastic ability to resorb bone is impaired.
