Normally, upon inspiration the thoracic cavity expands which reduces the pressure and Jugular Venous Pressure (JVP) falls. However, in some conditions such as constrictive percarditis, restrictive cardiomyopathy, and tricuspid stenosis, JVP does not fall but increase with inspiration. This rise in Jugular Venous Pressure (JVP) during inspiration is called Kussmal’s sign.
