How can you differentiate the JVP from the carotid pulse?
JVP is better visible while carotid pulse is better palpable. JVP is oscillatory waveform with more prominent inward movement whereas carotid pulse a rapid outward jerky movement. JVP is observed in the triangle formed by two heads of sternomastoid and clavicle and carotid pulse is seen internal to sternomastoid. JVP is independent of respiration and position whereas carotid pulse is depends on respiration and position of patient. JVP is independent of abdominal pressure whereas carotid pulse depends upon abdominal pressure. JVP is not affected by the pressure at the root of neck whereas carotid pulse is diminished with pressure at the root of neck.
