Mandibular tori

Mandibular tori

Torus mandibularis or Mandibular tori is a bony growth in the mandible along the surface of the tongue. Mandibular tori are usually present near the premolars and above the location of the mylohyoid muscle's attachment to the mandible. In 90% of cases, they are found on both the left and right sides. FACTORS: Factors responsible for mandibular tori include: Trauma or injury to the mouth's interior Jawbone stress due to teeth grinding and clenching Diet influences, such as vitamin deficiencies, fish consumption, and calcium-rich diets. Age and sex Genetics TREATMENT: The treatment is only recommended in case of complication or severity, otherwise dental professionals usually don't recommend any treatment. The complications arises if the torus: Becomes inflamed when scraped while eating or engaging in other activities (like having dental X-rays) Begins to interfere with basic daily functions (eating and speaking) Hinders the placement of braces or a prosthesis Grow to the point where they touch in the middle of the mouth Cause other oral health problems In case of Scraped tori, bacteria in the mouth is decreased which causes the area to heal. This is easily done by cleansing the injured area with a germ-killing fluoride toothpaste or rinse. If the tori must be extracted, it is performed by a maxillofacial surgeon to remove the bony growth. The surgery has the same risks as any other surgery.
