Astrocytoma diffusa (Immunohistochemistry marker Ki67)

Astrocytoma diffusa (Immunohistochemistry marker Ki67)

Astrocytoma diffusa is a glial neoplasm. Most common localization are the cerebral hemispheres. Normally the rate of mitosis is low and cellularity is mild. To visualize the mitotic active cells under the microscope antibodies against the antigen Ki-67 for labeling are used. Ki-67 is a nuclear protein in human cells. It can be detected especially during interphase and is not detectable during resting phase of cell cycle. So by labeling Ki-67 the cells in mitotic stage become brownish and we can easily calculate the amount of cellular proliferation in cancer. Similar process is used also in prostate cancer by the way!
