Biodegradable Synthetic Membrane for Treating 2nd Degree Burns

Biodegradable Synthetic Membrane for Treating 2nd Degree Burns

A biodegradable synthetic membrane by the name Suprathel® has shown remarkable healing in superficial to deep second degree burn in both adult and pediatric population. This absorbable membrane shows healing without grafting. The standard management of second-degree burn is daily dressing along with close monitoring of inflammatory markers and fluid management. However, this management gets complicated with severe pain from daily change of dressings, use of opioid analgesics, and infections. The ideal management plan would require minimum change of dressings, low infection rate, and no pain. Suprathel® has lactic acid which combines with exudate from wound and provide optimum environment for cell growth. This biodegradable synthetic membrane sticks with the wound soon after its application, and therefore has minimum risk of dislodging around joint areas. Since it is absorbable, hence multiple dressings are not required. When compared with other available options such as amniotic membrane, allograft, xenograft, and other skin substitutes, Suprathel was proven to be most efficacious. Minimum to no scarring was noticed after complete healing.
