340 people are diagnosed with Encephalocele a year. This is a rare disorder where a portion of the skull does not close properly during development. This gap causes portions of the brain to grow outside the skull. Babies diagnosed with this disorder are likely to experience problems with vision, seizures and severe disability. In this case, the young boy also has a Tessier facial cleft as well. This particular cleft causes the right and left sides of the head to not completely form together, due to the gap caused by encephalocele. In cases like this, the encephalocele will have to be removed, followed by a reconstruction of the skull. The surgeon must work on the cleft as well. Overall this was a very successful surgery with inspiring results. @PlasticSurgery has many more stories just like this, check out their page!
When doing surgery do they just “stuff” the excess brain back where it needs to be? Does this not further damage the brain? The surgeon did an incredible job❤️
