CSF is one of the four major fluid compartments in the brain, we can characterize it by these 4 points : 1- colorless (if black or other color there will be a problem) 2- surrounding the brain and the spinal cord 3- protein-poor content ( it contains Ions, water , glucose and and little protein) 4-serous plasma filtrate Which's mean that it is generated from blood and absorbed back to it. ----- Normal value for the CSF in our brain and spinal cord is 150ml. If the generation > absorption, volume will increase and the the ICP increases. If generation < absorption, volume will decrease. ----- Where we can find it? - The ventricular system (inside the brain) - The subarachnoid space (surrounded the brain and the spinal cord) - The central canal (inside the spinal cord) ----- *IMPORTANT* CSF is dynamic/circulatory . ----- Function: - Shock absorption - Second circulatory fluid delivering nutrients, O2, and some ions to the nervous system. - Removing potentially harmful brain metabolites by Acting as a lymphatic system in the brain ( Because no lymphatic system in the brain) - conduit for hormones that secreted from hypothalamic neurons - Allows the brain to float, reducing its real weight * What is the importance of reducing its real weight? To prevent the occlusion of the small capillaries beneath the brain and then effect the blood supply, and to prevent compression of the small nerve fibers that passes inferiorly to the spinal cord.
