The inferior vena cava ascends in front of the vertibral column to the right of the sagittal plane. Therefore the left common iliac vein must travel a greater distance to drain into the IVC than the right common iliac vein, hence making it longer. Both the right and left iliac veins are related to the corresponding common iliac arteries anteriorly.

Both common iliac veins ascend to form the inferior vena cava behind the right common iliac artery at the level of the fifth lumbar vertebra. The vena cava is to the right of the midline and therefore the left common iliac vein is longer than the right.

Left one directly drains into ivc.. and right one to right renal vein.. thus longer route longer vein
