Snake bite left this patient with a “black stick” leg due to severe necrosis!! A 13-year-old girl has apparently been left with a horrifically blackened and shrivelled leg after a snake bite caused her muscle cells to wither and die. The Venezuelan teen developed necrosis and gangrene of her left lower extremity due to a snake bite that was treated only with local indigenous remedies for a month before she was brought to a hospital. By this time she had developed a severe case of necrosis which in turn has led to a condition called rhabdomyolysis which can cause muscle tissue throughout the body to die. Snake venom is very complicated and depends on the species of snake. But the picture shows clearly severe tissue necrosis that will need amputation. The whole lower leg is black. It’s spreading up. Looking at the rest of her body, she’s showing signs of muscle wastage from the poison and her other leg is thin. A typical bite from a venomous snake will result in the presence of two puncture wounds from the animal's fangs. This may result in redness, swelling, and severe pain at the area, which may take up to an hour to appear. As the bite goes untreated, it often leads to localized soft tissue necrosis. Less frequently victims may suffer extensive muscle damage leading to rhabdomyolysis to due a myotoxin found in the venom. First aid steps you can take after a snake bite occurs include cleaning the wound, remaining calm, and immobilizing the affected area. However, it’s essential to get to a medical facility immediately for emergency treatment. If treated in time, the outlook for recovery is good. Photo credit to @juventudmedica
