Awake Craniotomy

Awake Craniotomy

An awake craniotomy can be considered a neurosurgical technique. This technique allows neurosurgeons to find key areas that are vital in the brain. For instance, neurosurgeons can utilize this technique to map out the motor strip (Brodmann area 4) or the receptive/motor speech cortex (such as the Broca’s area). Although the patient is awake, they are quite heavily sedated and they do not feel pain.
