What do we do with the bone that we take off? Sometimes the brain swells so much that it's impossible to put it back on. Sometimes we put the bone back on and the brain swells later down the line - meaning another operation. We don't know yet what the long-term outcomes of any of this are. The Rescue-ASDH trial aims to try and find the answers to these questions.
I would be interested in the results of this trial.....if the brain is swelling after decompression the answer is obvious but in my hospital its down to surgeon's discretion whether to re- implant the flap.....an ICP monitor either was is a given. Also what to do with the bone flap that's not reimplanted.....all but one of the surgeons send it to the bone bank and one buries it in the abdomen😷😊
