Information for the general public: Aneurysms are balloon-like weaknesses on blood vessel walls (arteries) that occur over a long time. When brain aneurysms rupture this can often prove fatal, so when one is found on a brain scan, the aim is to either observe it long-term, or secure it. This can be done by less invasive methods (placing coils in the aneurysm from inside the blood vessel), or with open surgery where a titanium clip is placed around the neck of the aneurysm - permanently sealing it. For junior doctors and FRCS candidates: This video shows microsurgical technique for clipping of an MCA aneurysm and coincidental blister aneurysm, followed by clipping of a contralateral ICA bifurcation aneurysm. At the end of the video the operating surgeon performs a third ventriculostomy. All images are copyright to Brainbook and written informed consent was gained from all patients involved.
