First question back is what is the indication for a full removal of the thyroid gland? If it has a malignant tumor (and I wouldn’t know another indication), the only curative option is to excise as much as possible. In case of hyperthyroidism, the thyroid is partially removed. As the thyroid produces hormones, these need to be substituted in a complete removal. However, a lot of people live a normal live with substitution of their thyroid hormone. In canes of hyperthyroidism no substitution is needed. The surgical scar can be upsetting, but most surgeons use an intradermal suture technique so scarring should be minimal (but is also dependent on the darkness of your skin; think about keloid formation). If you are advised to get this procedure done, talk to your family physician or specialist. They can give you a lot more information suited for your situation. Good luck!
