Replantation refers to reattachment of a completely severed part, meaning there is no physical connection between the part that has been cut off and the person. Reattachment can be surgically performed for the finger and such other detached body parts, as the hand or arm. Finger amputation is a challenging injury to manage. From the identification of vessel ends to reanastomosis of the submillimeter vessels, the highly specialized anatomy requires technical excellence and precisely addressing the anatomic challenges. It is possible to restore the function and survival of the replanted part, with the general operative sequence being the vascular shunt first to minimize ischemia time, bone fixation with or without shortening if needed, extensor tendon repair, artery repair, venous anastomoses, flexor tendon repair, nerve repair.
