Open ankle fracture/dislocation

There is a piece of sock attached to the end of the broken tibia. Fractures of the ankle are fairly common injuries. Open ankle fractures are much less common and associated with severe injuries to surrounding tissues. In the treatment of open fractures, the surgeon’s objectives are to prevent infection, promote fracture healing, and restore function without complications. A fracture is considered to be open when disruption of the skin and underlying soft tissues results in a communication between the fracture and the outside environment.
