Cerebral Cavernous Malformations (CCMs) are brain lesions comprised of tightly-wound blood vessels. CCMs may either occur suddenly, or be the result of mutations in the CCM1/2/3 genes. Symptoms vary depending on the area of the brain that is affected. Treatment consists of surgical removal of the lesions; however, some are inoperable depending on where they are situated in the brain. CCMs tend to hemorrhage without warning, unfortunately, so the prognosis is variable in these patients.
