Lithopedion

Lithopedion

The 3D CT scan of a 70-year-old Algerian women with a fetus that was inside her for over 30 years! This extremely rare phenomenon is called Lithopedion, which means "stone baby". It occurs most commonly when the fetus dies during an abdominal pregnancy, and has been retained by the mother. That fetus was too big to be reabsorbed by the body, and subsequently calcified on the outside as part of a maternal foreign body reaction, shielding the mother's body from the dead tissue of the fetus and preventing infection.

No, there was a documentary made about this case. I'm not sure where I saw it but it shows the patient and the "fetus" after it was removed. She went into labor and knew she wasn't progressing. She knew she wouldn't get the baby out on her own but maternal morbidity from c/s in her area was so high she was afraid to have one. After a few days her contractions stopped and she basically went about her life.

sorry if i may ask... does this condition favour the patient... i mean the mother here.... because it is mentioned the shielding the mother's body from the dead tissue of the fetus and preventing infection... so teh fetus protecting the body of the mother, right??

No, the mothers body protects itself from the dead fetus by calcifying the dead tissue and separating the fetus from the internal organs.
