McBurney's Point

McBurney's Point

It is a point located at 1/3 of the distance between umbilicus and anterior superior iliac spine. The importance of this point is that in patients complaining of acute appendicitis, the maximum tenderness (Painful touching) is felt at this point. This is one of many signs that are used in diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Please note that this sign is not always positive as the appendix may vary in it's anatomical location.
