Things were getting a little hot in there, so he decided to pop out even if his amniotic sac didn’t rupture yet! This is an en-caul birth, when a baby emerges still encased in the amniotic sac at birth. While this birth is extremely rare, it does not pose a specific risk on the baby nor the mother. This fluid-filled sac cushions the fetus, protects the fetus from damage and allows the fetus to move freely. In most cases, rupture of the amniotic sac occurs spontaneously at full term either during or at the beginning of labor. This process is better known as "water breaking", although in rare cases like the one presented above, rupture of the membrane doesn't take place and the fetus is born within an entirely intact sac.
