This baby, whose gender was impossible to be determined based on external appearance, was born to a 23-year-old Indian mother, but lost it just four hours later, due to the conditions fatal nature and complications associated with abnormal kidney and urinary bladder development and function. The baby had normal formation in upper part of the body but below the waist its legs were fused together, a rare condition known as ‘Mermaid Syndrome’ or Sirenomelia. It was the second case in the country and fifth in the world. The mother had not undergone sonography and only learnt about the baby’s condition when she first saw it after birth. The exact cause of sirenomelia is unknown and heavily debated, but it is believed that it results from a failure of normal vascular supply from the lower aorta in utero, causing severe ischemia to the caudal portion of the fetus.
Google Shiloh Pepin to learn about a girl with sirenomelia who lived life to the fullest until she died at age 10. RIP Shiloh😞
