The first man to operate on himself in 1961, Leonid was 27 and was the only surgeon in the Soviet Antarctic Expedition. During the expedition he felt a severe pain in the stomach and had a high fever. Rogozov examines himself and discovered that his appendix was inflamed and could burst at any time. With local anesthesia, he opened himself to remove his appendix, he didn’t wear gloves but he says holding a mirror helped, with the help from an engineer and a meteorologist, they assisted with the surgery.
