An amazing case of coronary artery bypass grafting

Coronary artery bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, is a surgical procedure to restore normal blood flow to an obstructed coronary artery. The surgery creates a new path for blood to flow to the heart. The surgeon takes a healthy piece of vein from the leg or artery from the chest or wrist. Then the surgeon attaches it to the coronary artery, just above and below the narrowed area or blockage. This allows blood to bypass (get around) the blockage. Sometimes people need more than one bypass. It is performed to relieve angina, prevent or relieve left ventricular dysfunction, and/or reduce the risk of death. It does not prevent heart attacks. This surgery is usually performed with the heart stopped, necessitating the usage of cardiopulmonary bypass; however, two alternative techniques are also available allowing CABG to be performed on a beating heart. This surgery is often indicated when coronary arteries have a 50% to 99% obstruction. The obstruction being bypassed is typically due to arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis, or both. Each can limit blood flow if it causes a cross-sectional narrowing of at least 50%. The results of the surgery are usually excellent. Many people remain symptom-free for many years. You may need surgery again if blockages form in the grafted arteries or veins or in arteries that weren't blocked before. Lifestyle changes and medicines may help prevent arteries from becoming clogged again.Photo credit: @upstate_surgery_and_medicine

CABG is only done when there's more blockage in arteries. A peice of vein (Great sephanous vein )is commonly used for grafting. An another procedure is also can be done in case of less blockage... That is" Angioplasty "- repairing of blocked arteries is done with the help of stent catheter, ballon catheter to reduce the blokage or cholesterol deposited on the wall of arteries.
