During short breath hold apnea, like apnea during diving or when face or whole body is temporarily immersed in water, or in other cases which leads to apnea, Spleen volume decreases, leading to reduction in splenic size . The reason behind is that spleen is the reservoir of blood cells. Thus when apnea starts increased release of red blood cells from spleen to meet the oxygen demand of the tissue leads to reduction in volume of spleen. Soon after the person starts breathing ,spleen attain it's normal volume.
