Let's talk pancreas! It is an organ about the size of a hand located behind the lower part of the stomach. If functions both as an exocrine and endocrine gland. Pancreatic islets contain several types of cells, including alpha cells for glucagon, beta cells that produce the hormone insulin and delta cells for somatostatin. In type 1 diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas no longer make insulin because the body's immune system has attacked and destroyed them. This condition necessitates daily insulin injections in order to keep the glucose level in normal range. But what about replacing the damaged cells? In pancreatic islet transplantation, cells are taken from a donor pancreas and transferred into another person. Once implanted, the new islets begin to make and release insulin. This helps people with type 1 diabetes live without daily insulin injections.Photo by @medicalphotographer
Reduce their weight and see if insulin requirements. In China gastric sleeves are being done as a prevention to type 2 diabetes.
Patients with type two diabetes do create insulin, they are just insulin resistant. Meaning their cells no longer respond to insulin appropriately.
I did hear that after attempts of this surgery in 1 and 2 it failed as the islets are so sensitive and all transplantations did fail or the effects weren't worth it
It's very interesting! After the surgery the patient need's inmunosupreso
Very interesting! After the surgery the patient need's inmunossupressants?
