This is a mega-size heart removed from a 21-years-old young male, who suffered from an end-stage dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart's ability to pump blood is decreased because the heart's main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, is enlarged and weakened.The weird fact is that the patient had no past diseases, was in shape and led a healthy lifestyle. A new heart was transplanted and the patient subsequently recovered very well. The surgeon took this photo of the enlarged heart during the transplantation, he said it was the size of a soccer ball (normal hearts are usually half the size!).
