Heart in the abdomen!

Chances are you've noticed the heart is completely absent on that chest radiograph and hanging on in the abdominal cavity - swipe to see the CT scan. Thats a presentation of a rare congenital malformation in which the heart is abnormally located either partially or totally outside of the thorax. The ectopic heart might be found in different anatomical locations such as neck, chest, or abdomen and is classified according to the location. In some cases the heart protrudes outside the chest through a split sternum, but a thoracic, thoraco-abdominal or abdominal ectopia cordis constitute the vast majority of cases, in which the heart is displaced adjacent to the thorax or even into the abdominal cavity, as seen above. The photo is just an illustration as most infants are stillborn or die within the first hours or days of life.
