If PCOS is known to cause long term issues such as insulin resistance, obesity, hirsutism, even leading to diabetes and heart disease, why won't physicians remove an ovary or two as treatment? What other treatments may be recommended?
Taking out both ovaries puts the woman through early menopause, if they are of younger age. Taking out one, just doesn't seem right, if both are affected. Some women still want children, and without any ovaries, they cannot produce the hormones needed to keep a pregnancy, even with IVF or other infertility treatments ^^
Removing the ovaries (bilateral oophorectomy or hysterectomy) is an option for women with severely symptomatic PCOS who do not want future pregnancies. Other treatments : lifestyle changes (lose weight, by exercising regularly and eating a healthy, balance diet), medications (clomifen, letrozole, etc)
