In atrophic rhinitis the defence mechanisms of cilia and mucous glands is no more there, nose becomes more prone to get severely secondarily infected leading to tissue destruction and anaerobic infection resulting in a very foul smelling discharge from the nose. The patient is brought by his family or friends, with the complaint of very foul smelling discharge from the nose of the patient which the patient himself is unaware of. This is because the patient has anosmia because of atrophy of nerves and whatever mucosa and nerves is left is covered by crust preventing air contact. This is known as merciful or blissful anosmia.
