At the 24-week visit, a pregnant woman demonstrates a less-than-expected growth in uterine size, an easily palpable fetus that can be outlined by the nurse, and the absence of fetal ballottement. A nurse should recognize that this is most likely related to the development of:
Explanation
ExplanationOligohydramnios occurs when the amount of amniotic fluid is severely reduced. This condition results in less than expected uterine growth, a fetus surrounded by little amniotic fluid and therefore easily palpated and outlined, and an absence of fetal ballottement (rebound when displaced by a light tap of an examining finger through the vagina). Hydramnios is an excess of amniotic fluid and is evidenced by overdistention of the uterus. This condition is accompanied by an increased incidence of prolapsed cord and malpresentation at the time of delivery. Macrosomia is the term applied to babies who are too large for gestational age.
