ExplanationStatus epilepticus is a medical emergency; it is an acute prolonged epileptic convulsion for more than 5 minutes or intermittent seizures without regaining consciousness for more than 5 minutes. The British Resuscitation Council recommends giving medication only if seizures are prolonged (ie convulsions last more than 5 minutes), eg 10 mg midazolam buccally. Patients do not need to be moved off the dental chair but ensure that they do not harm themselves during the convulsion.
