SMALL AND LARGE INTESTINE
A 45-year-old male patient complains of diarrhoea with mucus and blood. He has three to four such motions a day, which are associated with dull aching in his lower abdomen. He has had these symptoms for the past 4 months during which time he has lost about 10 pounds in weight. Abdominal examination reveals some vague tenderness. Rectal examination shows blood and mucus, and sigmoidoscopy shows hyperaemic mucosa, which bleeds easily.
