‌Holoprosencephaly - rare birth defect

Holoprosencephaly is a birth defect that occurs during the first weeks of pregnancy because the fetal brain is not divided as it should into two cerebral hemispheres (the two halves of the brain) and the lateral ventricles (the cavities of the brain where it circulates the cerebrospinal fluid). The lack of division results in a complete or partial union of the cerebral hemispheres and in a partial communication or in a single ventricle, instead of two lateral ventricles.

My daughter was born with this but she was not deformed in any way. She lived to be five. She was blind and had seizures daily. She had the brain stem and cerebellum but the rest of her brain was missing and her head was filled with fluid. Eventually she needed a shunt placed but it wasn't until she was eight months old and started having seizures that things started to change. Until that point, she was a normal baby except she didn't have the newborn reflex where they jerk to strengthen muscles. She was my angel & miracle baby. Refused to call me mama even though she could say it. She called me "love" 🥰
