Degloving injuries are avulsion injuries that occur when a section of the skin is completely torn off from the underlying tissue. These injuries are common in the ER and are usually present in patients that were in a motor cycle crash and not wearing protective clothing. There are two types of avulsion injuries: Suprafascial and Subfascial. Suprafascial avulsion occurs when the skin that is removed does not extend past the subcutaneous tissue layer. On the other hand a subfascial avulsion goes past the subcutaneous tissue layer and exposes the muscles tendons and bones. So in this case, this injury is a subfascial avulsion which is commonly referred to as a major degloving injury of the finger which is named analogously to the action of taking off a glove.
