Prostaglandins are hormone like substanstances that contain arachidonic acid as their main component. They have various functions: 1)act as vasodilators or vasoconstrictors(they control blood pressure by these mechanisms) 2) platelet aggregation(by thromboxane)3)stimulate uterine contractions during childbirth 4)act as mediators of inflammation
