The Tree that has grown inside of us! Together, the trachea and intrapulmonary airways are referred to as the Bronchial Tree, the functional segment of the respiratory system. It includes the right and left bronchi, bronchioles and respiratory bronchioles. At the end of the bronchial tree lie the alveolar ducts, the alveolar sacs, and the alveoli (not shown), which is the site of gas exchange. The tubes that make up the bronchial tree perform the same function as the trachea: distribution of air to the lungs. The alveoli are responsible for the primary function of the lungs, which is exchanging carbon dioxide and oxygen. Lots more to review in Pulmonary Anatomy, much to come!
