Ludwigs angina.

Ludwigs angina.

Ludwigs angina is an infection of submandibular space. Most common cause -80% with dental caries. Mylohyoid muscle divides the sybmandibular space into two compartments: 1)Sublingual:above the mylohyoid-so infection of roots of premolar(due to its location above the mylohyoid line) causes primarily the sublingual space infection. 2)Submaxillary:below the mylohyoid-so infection of roots of molar(extending upto or below mylohyoid line)causes primarily the submaxillary space infection. Note: both the compartments are continuous around the posterior border of mylohyoid muscle. Treatment: 1)Systemic antibiotics. 2)Incision and drainage of abscess. a)Intraoral-if infection is still localized in sublingual space. b) External-infection involving submaxillary space. Transverse incision is given extending from one angle of mandible to the other Note: ofter serous fluid is encountered ratger than frank pus.
