Hiya! I’m 19 and just completed my first year of medicine in South Africa. My main advice would be, if the passion for medicine stays with you, you must do well in high school to get into a good university and into medical school. But at the same time you need to enjoy your life. Secondly, you must have a passion for medicine and love medicine or you will become demotivated and burn out. Finally, don’t decide on a specialization now. You will see so many different areas of medicine when you do medical school that you may love. Keep your mind open, for now it’s just medicine: later you can decide what to specialize in.

Also, check out some universities and medical schools and check out their requirements on what subjects you should take. Eg. Physics, chemistry, biology, maths are required in South Africa, along with English and a second language.

I am last year medical student from Ethiopia and my advice is your passion matters b/c most of the time students join medicine by the interest of their family. This has miserable drawback. When you join med by your interest just to help at least 1 patient who is dying at next door of you you can get succeed. I am so happy in joining med. I believe I can help at least 1 patient.

That is my plan also. I am a senior in high school and start at college next year. I am going to study Biochemistry with a Pre-Medicine emphasis. A good thing to do right when you go into college is to get an MCAT review book. Then you can be reviewing that all four years before you take the test to get into med school. Also, go to a college that is heavily focused on science and health majors then go to Med school in the state you want to end up in. You’ve got time to figure stuff out though! It’s awesome you have an idea of what you want to do as a freshman!

I'm Maryane, currently a Junior in high school. I plan to become a double specialized surgeon, one of the specialties being Trauma. I think that for now, you can study ahead on all the different types of human systems, and even practice sutures once you know enough. Don't try to read case studies yet, unless you're absolutely ready. And always review what you're currently being taught. Read alot of books, improve your speech and vocabulary. Your social skills as well, doctor-patient relationship is important. And also, have fun while you're not in med school yet. Go out sometimes, go to a club and ser what it's like perhaps.
