Explain Why (please elaborate) Why lung alveoli are kept dry normally?? (How??)
Surfactant helps keep the alveoli relatively dry- a highly surface tension would suck fluid away from the alveolar walls into the alveolar space but with the decreased surface tension provided by surfactant., the alveolar space is maintained in a relatively drystate
Alveoli are maintained dry for proper exchange of gas (oxygen and carbondioxide) if it's filled with fluid like in pulmonary edema it will cause problems in breathing and lack of oxygen in blood... it's like when your nose is filled with excessive mucus during cold you can't breath with nose the same way if your alveoli's filled with liquid you can't get oxygen causing hypoxemia then hypoxia which can cause severe organ dysfunction and may lead to death
