Fetal umbilical cord

Did you know that the umbilical cord contains 2 arteries and one vein? Furthermore, among these vessels there is a gelatinous material called Wharton Jelly. This jelly is important because its consistency helps prevent the collaps of vessels, very important mechanism in those cases of umbilical cord prolapse. Another curiosuse thing is that the arteries lead the blood with poor nutrients from the fetus towards the placenta, while oxygenated and nutrient-Rich blood returns to the fetus by the umbilical vein.
