How to remember the names of different generations of cephalosporins and their actions against microbes?
Honestly, the easiest way I remember cephalosporin generations is with quick mnemonics: 1st gen → PEcK (Proteus, E. coli, cocci, Klebsiella) 2nd gen → HENPEcK (adds Haemophilus, Enterobacter, Neisseria) 3rd gen → better gram-negative coverage + CNS penetration (think meningitis) 4th gen → broad spectrum + Pseudomonas (cefepime is “prime”) 5th gen → special one, fights MRSA (ceftaroline) So in my head it’s just: “First PEcK, Second HEN, Third for CNS, Fourth is Prime, Fifth fights MRSA.”
