Immediately following the discovery of anesthesia in 1846, surgery became more dangerous. The surgeon, unaware of the existence of germs, was more willing to pick up the knife & go deeper into the body. He rarely washed his hands or his instruments, and carried with him a smell of rotting flesh which those in the profession called GOOD OLD HOSPITAL STINK. As a result of these unsanitary conditions, postoperative infection rose in hospitals. Surgeries became nothing more than slow moving executions. This is a photo from the Ether Dome in Boston, c.1850.
