(A) Cross-sectional view of the posterior aspect of the mandible, showing concave contour of the superior aspect of the ridge from resorption. Mylohyoid ridge and external oblique lines form the highest portions of the ridge. (This can generally best be treated by alloplastic augmentation of the mandible but, in rare cases, may also require mylohyoid ridge reduction.) (B) Crestal incision and exposure of the lingual aspect of the mandible for removal of sharp bone in the mylohyoid ridge area. Rongeur or burr in a rotating handpiece can be used to remove bone. (C) Bone file used to complete recontouring of the mylohyoid ridge.
