First, this is not a sweet potato as one of my colleagues asked today. They say that keeping an upward pointing horseshoe is a good luck charm, well this guy didn’t need a real horseshoe because he just kept his kidney pointing up. He must have used up all his luck though as he died from a gall bladder infection. This is the kidney of a 72 year old man which was discovered at autopsy to have a congenital defect called Horseshoe kidney or SUPERKIDNEY. The defect causes the left and right kidney to fuse with a bridge known as the isthmus. The cause is currently unknown along with the mechanism of the fusion and there is no cure. The kidneys function is rarely affected by this condition which is why this one was only discovered after the patient’s death due to an unrelated illness. Although, having it can put you at increased risk for conditions like kidney stones, urinary tract infections & kidney cancer.
