Mania is a component of type I bipolar disorder in which there is an abnormal and persistent elevated or expansive mood characterized by specific symptoms. Both the DSM-IV and ICD-10 specify that, a manic episode should last at least one week and that the disturbance in the mood should be sufficient to disrupt or impair social and work life. The symptoms can be remembered using the mnemonic: DIG FAST D = Distractibility and easy frustration I = Irresponsibility and erratic uninhibited behavior G = Grandiosity F = Flight of ideas A = Activity increased with weight loss and increased libido S = Sleep is decreased T = Talkativeness
