Clinical presentation of Diabetic ketoacidosis

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a medical emergency. Patient presents with insidious polydipsia and polyurea. He/She can also present with nausea, vomiting and diffuse abdominal pain along with decreased appetite and anorexia. On physical examination patient may have ill appearance, dry skin, laboured respiration, decreased skin tugor and reflexes, characteristic acetone breathing odor. Specific signs include confusion, coma and abdominal tenderness. Effects on vital signs that are related to DKA may include tachycardia, hypotension, tachypnea, hypothermia, fever, if infection is present
