The Babinski reflex is a reflex response of the foot that is evoked when the sole of the foot is swiped with a blunt toe. The Babinski reflex is considered a physiological reflex in the infant but may indicate a spinal tract injury or nerve-related disease if present in the adult. A positive babinsky is obtained when the toes of the foot, stressed with the instrument extend generating what is called "fan toes', in the case of negative babinsky there will instead be physiological flexion of the toes. The Babinsky sign can have multiple causes ranging from neurodegenerative disease such as ALS or MS, or due to damage of the corticospinal pyramidal pathway following trauma.
